I managed my way through the errors using using the terminal.
At one point I was prompted to hit "Y, N, I, O" in the terminal if I remember correctly to write over some config files (I hit Y for every option). Now, when I get the the password screen before the desktop, I can't actually log into the desktop when I enter my password.
All we want to know presently is that you can boot to the GUI .... I used my password and the same issue that I mentioned in the OP happened. That condition does not compute with my thought process....
